8 Criteria for Boosting Fertility Naturally

When it comes to maximizing your chances of giving birth to a healthy baby, it is important to consider all of your options to maximize your chance of success.

The time you spend preparing your body will be of inestimable valuable, and can improve your chances for success.

The best treatment for any kind of condition is one that treats the individual as an individual.

Yet integrated care allows all of the different elements of the fertility goal to apply to the couple as a whole. Treating both individuals of the conception team in a holistic manner engages them in their individual treatment plans to bring about a synergy of care that hopefully becomes greater than the sum of its parts. This approach allows both mother- and father-to-be to work together in the right direction, as individuals with a unified desire: a positive fertility outcome.

There are eight areas that must be addressed to boost fertility chances naturally:

1. Stress

Stress can take its toll on the reproductive system, and having problems conceiving can add to existing stress. This creates a vicious cycle. In women, stress can disrupt the ovulation cycle. In men, stress can lower sperm count and increase the number of abnormal sperm.

2. Happiness

A happy, positive relationship is not an ethereal goal; it is an important physical part of the fertility story.

3. Exercise

It is impossible to overestimate the benefits of exercise. Measured, regular exercise not only increases fertility but is known to reduce cognitive deficit, osteoporosis, anxiety, depression and fatigue, as well as improve cardiovascular health and quality of life. Yoga in particular is an excellent stress buster! But don’t overdo it: Excessive exercise with a reduction in body fat can have a negative effect on fertility by upsetting ovulation.

4. Diet

A balanced diet is essential for overall good pre-conception health. Folic acid and Vitamin B12 have been found to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects. Antioxidants, including coenzyme Q-10, can be beneficial in combating age-related fertility struggles. Other vitamins and minerals, as well as omega 3 oils, also are critical to a healthy body that is ready to conceive as well as male health and fertility.

Conception is more likely to occur with a normal body mass index. The ideal BMI is between 20-25kg / m2. Women who are underweight (≤ 20kg/ m2 have an increased risk of not ovulating and having amenorrhea (no period). A BMI lower than 19 has been determined to increase time to conception fourfold. A BMI greater than 35 increases the time to conception twofold, while creating greater risks of miscarriage and complications during pregnancy, delivery and post- partum.

5. Smoking

Smoking is detrimental to oocytes, sperm and embryos. Kick the habit once and for all. Research proves that smoking reduces the possibility of getting pregnant. Smoking also increases the risk of miscarriage. Smokers have also been shown to be more likely to have underweight babies, increasing risks of future health problems.

6. Caffeine and alcohol consumption

Excessive alcohol can affect hormone production in both males and females. In men, excess drinking can cause erectile problems and can have a detrimental effect on sperm production. There is no evidence to suggest moderate alcohol consumption affects fertility. High levels of caffeine consumption (500mg: ≥ 5 cups of coffee per day) have been associated with decreased fertility.

7. Creation of a “road maps”

Any management program requires some form of “road map,” an organized schedule and plan. This means exploring all treatment options available, and determining which works best for you. Making informed choices will make the journey easier and ideally allow most couples to arrive at their target.


8. The “S” Word

The single most important thing in trying to get pregnant is to not forget sex. Romance, really. Be careful to keep the stress of trying to conceive from reducing sexual esteem, satisfaction and—critically—frequency. Reproduction efficiency increases with frequency of intercourse, but the optimal frequency is best defined by the couple’s own preference. Still, it’s important to remember: If you don’t “buy a ticket,” you can’t win the lottery!

I suggest the couple enjoy sexual relations two to three times a week, throughout the week—not just on weekends. At the very least, aim to have sex during your most fertile time of the month—about five days before, and one day after ovulation. In a 28-day cycle, this happens between days 10 and 17.
